Depends on whether or not you believe that "freedom to not respect other users' freedom by creating proprietary forks" is a freedom that should be protected. I do not, so I disagree that the GPL (or any free software license) respects user freedom more or less -- the GPL is just much better at protecting freedom than other licenses.
