I believe this kind of over simplification or representation exists for many aspects of life, this is how our brain copes with complex matters (I believe). Which I understand but do not like or willing to accept when it comes to me as it is being lazy (or dumb) behavior sparing the observer from the job of real discovery of the subject at hand leading to prejudice or much worse destructive practices (e.g. racism).
