Well why don't you make some content available and then people will see what they're signing up for. If you've already got it then this is zero effort for a higher conversion.
FWIW I've flagged this because at the moment you're 'showing' HN nothing but a Mailchimp form. This is a sub-MVP.
From your point of view it's a success - there's clearly interest. Put some content on the site, resubmit it. The audience is clearly there. Email me when you do and I'll be the first to upvote it.
People, stop treating yourself badly. Eating ramen everyday may seem to be the cheap thing to do, but it's not value for money in the long run.
Here's a site for fellow hackers - Fork the Cookbook (http://forkthecookbook.com). People say it's like github for recipes, but I think it's a pretty site with some great recipes.
Good food does not have to be expensive. Find a recipe you like, and fork it with cheaper ingredients. Let 2013 be your year of healthy eating.
The issue is not just money, it's time, which includes shopping, preparation, and cleanup in addition to cooking.
I love cooking, but after a long day's work, when you have other stuff you want to do, sometimes it's hard to fit in cooking too; even just "throw some rice and veggies into the rice cooker" (a simple, tasty, cheap, and healthy meal) sometimes seems a huge burden...
A slow cooker is your friend! When I was younger and foolisher, there would be days when I would stay up for 48 hours straight coding. I still always had pulled pork, soup or congee of some sort (three of the simplest things to make with a slow cooker) to keep me going.
Now, I've just learned to take my time with things. No longer do I let things rush me.
I would love to contribute to this, both being a veteran of cash-strapped startup life and someone who enjoys cooking. Do you provide a way for people to do so?
